Dr. David Mayer, who is, among other titles, Co-Executive Director of the Institute for Patient Safety Excellence (IPSE) at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) College of Medicine and Curriculum Director for the Masters in Patient Safety Leadership (MPSL) program, was the featured speaker at the CCMS Fall Membership Meeting held at the Champaign Country Club on Thursday, September 8th.
Dr. Mayer’s presentation was titled, “Restoring Honesty, Trust and Safety in Healthcare . . . The Seven Pillars Approach to Unanticipated Outcomes.” which addressed strategies for maximizing patient safety, preventing medical errors and communicating appropriately when they do occur. Dr. Mayer gave the physicians an understanding of full disclosure, quality improvement, and other methods for ensuring and improving patient safety.
Dr. Mayer also led a discussion of strategies that physicians can use in their practices to improve patient care and communication. Participants learned that simple changes can make huge differences. CME credit was available for this program.
Also at the meeting, CCMS President, Sherfield Dawson, updated the membership on CCMS activities over the past few months and new members were voted into the Society.
The Physician Champion Awards were presented to Dr. Roger Ewald and Dr. Alan Peterson.
